Overview.
Many analysts were of the opinion that Notre Dame was fortunate to maintain a spot in the College Football Playoff following a blowout loss in the ACC Championship Game against Clemson. It took overtime for the Fighting Irish to beat Clemson in the regular season, a game in which the Tigers were without their starting quarterback and several mainstays on the defensive side of the ball as well. Nonetheless, Brian Kelly’s Notre Dame squad has passed every other test thrown at them this season, playing as a full member of the ACC. QB Ian Book grew in leaps and bounds throughout the year, and the Irish offensive line is capable of matching up against any other front in the country. Dictating the line of scrimmage figures to be key for Notre Dame to hang around in the Rose Bowl as nearly a three-TD underdog.
The betting market is paying Nick Saban and Alabama a whole lot of respect ahead of this CFP semifinal and for good reason. Despite being massive favorites in the vast majority of games this year, Alabama had a winning record ATS and dismantled their SEC competition on a weekly basis. Aside from a six-point win over Florida in an SEC Championship Game shootout, Alabama’s smallest margin of victory all year was a 15-point road win over Ole Miss. And that’s on domination!

Just this week, Smith became the first WR to win the AP Player of the Year Award. Harris could be leaned on heavily in the Rose Bowl in an effort to expose a Notre Dame defensive front that comes in dealing with a handful of injury concerns.

If you thought that the opening point spread of Alabama -17 was too large, think again. The betting market has bet the Tide up to as high as a 20.5-point favorite for this College Football Playoff matchup before Notre Dame was finally able to attract some buy-back dollars to put the line at the current Alabama -19.5. But don’t worry everyone, the CFP committee definitely got the top four teams right!
Looking at the total market for the Rose Bowl, we’ve seen very limited betting action. The betting market hasn’t strayed far from the opening line of 65.5, which also happens to be the current number. This figures to be mostly due to injury concerns on both teams that caused the total to be posted late. Keep an eye on the injury reports before kickoff, most notably the status of Crimson Tide receiver Jaylen Waddle.
Prediction.
I hate to say it, but I believe Notre Dame is set to be exposed on New Year’s Day. I don’t envision the Notre Dame secondary being able to contain Mac Jones and the elite Crimson Tide receivers. If the Irish defensive front is indeed hampered by injuries, stopping Najee Harris will become just as big of a problem.
The fact that sharps have laid points at will with Alabama despite the massive point spread says a lot. This game is a mismatch in a lot of ways. Unless the Irish can trade scores, things figure to get ugly quick. The Crimson Tide will cruise into the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. While the Alabama moneyline offers minimal return alone, it can easily be included in a parlay with some of the other New Year’s Day bowl games.

The public and sharps appear to be united on this matchup laying the points in early wagering. Bettors find it hard to get out in front of the Alabama train led by QB Mac Jones (3,379 passing yards; 32 touchdowns), and honestly, who could blame them? Having weapons like WR DeVonta Smith, who led the SEC and nation in receptions (9 receiving yards (1,511)) and finished second overall in receiving touchdowns (17), at his disposal makes the Tide’s offensive attack a nightmare to defend when you add in their balanced running game led by Senior RB Najee Harris. Harris led the nation in rushing touchdowns (24) while finishing third in rushing yards (1,262).
Alabama has reeled off 11 consecutive victories and has covered an impressive seven of their last eight games against the number. Over the last five games alone, the Crimson Tide have crushed their opponents, outscoring them 305-82. On the other hand, Notre Dame, despite going 9-1 SU in their last 10 games, have been difficult to trust backing against the spread going 5-5 ATS over that span.
The way the oddsmakers view these two teams is never more evident than by looking at their obvious power ranking variation resulting in a near three-touchdown disparity. The Vegas Whispers sharps currently do not envision a way that Notre Dame, who is coming off a 34-10 dismantling at the hands of the Clemson Tigers, can slow down this Alabama offense. This is a big number to lay, but Notre Dame does not have enough weapons on either side of the ball to keep this one close. No. 2 Clemson will face No. 3 Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl to determine the National Championship participants.
The 2021 College Football Playoff begins on New Years Day with a pair of exciting semifinal matchups. The first contest will see No. 1 Alabama clash with No. 4 Notre Dame in the Rose Bowl, although the game will take place at AT&T Stadium in Dallas instead of the traditional site at its namesake venue in Pasadena. This leads into a Sugar Bowl featuring No. 2 Clemson against No. 3 Ohio State, which is projected to be a much more tightly contested bout than the day’s first CFP semifinal game.
Oddsmakers opened the undefeated Crimson Tide as a whopping 19-point favorite over the Fighting Irish, a line that has been pushed further in Alabama’s direction after most public action leaned towards the top-ranked program. As of New Year’s Eve, ‘Bama has drawn 61% of all bets and 60% of the money wagered against the spread on the Rose Bowl and is now favored by 20 points at most books. It is worth noting that this is the largest spread in College Football Playoff history, dwarfing the previous high set by Alabama as a 14.5-point favorite over Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl two years ago. The Crimson Tide won but failed to cover in that contest, besting the Sooners by a 45-34 margin and advancing to the CFP Championship Game where they were ultimately upset by Clemson.
The Sugar Bowl odds are much more narrow, with the Tigers by seven points. This line is the same as the one bookmakers first put on the board, although it has shifted around a bit before getting back to the origin point. Clemson was favored by as many as 9.5 in recent days, but the Buckeyes received strong buyback at that number and have been steadily gaining traction amongst bigger bettors leading up to this CFP semifinal kickoff. The casual betting public is overwhelmingly supporting the Tigers here, evidenced by 65% of tickets on the team, but sharps have been backing Ohio State, which has now garnered an impressive 76% of the Sugar Bowl spread betting handle.
The totals on each of the 2021 College Football Playoff semifinal matchups are nearly identical, with Alabama-Notre Dame currently going off at 65.5 points and Clemson-Ohio State set just a tick above at 66.5 points. These are both relatively high over-under marks for CFP contests, although nowhere near the 80.5-point record that Alabama and Oklahoma set at the 2018 Orange Bowl. The 2021 Sugar Bowl and Rose Bowl will have the fifth- and sixth-highest totals, respectively, in CFP history, and many bettors believe each of these contests will still land over. The Tide-Fighting Irish game has seen 77% of all bets made on the total go towards the over, while the Tigers-Buckeyes over has drawn 57% of tickets.

It’s College Football Playoff week. The Alabama Crimson Tide, Clemson Tigers, Ohio State Buckeyes and Notre Dame Fighting Irish hit the gridiron in CFP Semifinals on Friday, January 1.
We caught up with MyBookie Head Oddsmaker David Strauss to discuss the latest odds heading into the race for the 2021 National Championship.
Rose Bowl.
No. 4 Notre Dame are massive 20.5-point underdogs in the Rose Bowl against No. 1 Alabama on New Year’s Day. The last time Alabama and Notre Dame played; things didn’t go well for The Irish.
In the 2013 BCS Championship, the Crimson Tide hammered Notre Dame, 42-14. Unfortunately for Notre Dame, oddsmakers expect much of the same this time around.
Alabama’s quarterback Mac Jones, running back Najee Harris, and wide receiver Devonta Smith have blasted opponents this season. In the SEC Championship, the triumvirate posted massive yards and points. No doubt, Alabama deserves its favorite status. Wouldn't surprise this oddsmaker if Alabama wins with an easy cover.
Sugar Bowl.
In a rematch of last season, we get a dandy on New Year's Day. The No. 2-seeded Clemson Tigers will take on the No. 3-seed Ohio State Buckeyes in the Sugar Bowl at Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans. These teams met in last season's Fiesta Bowl, which Clemson won 29-23.
Experts expect it to be an exciting game, especially with so many returning players from last season on both sides. Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields has been fantastic in almost every way, but the bookmakers suspect the Buckeyes defense won’t be stout enough to hang with Clemson. Tigers are listed as 7.5-point favorites.

Clemson versus Alabama has become the rivalry to watch in college football. Since the 2014-2015 season, the Tigers and Tide have met in the championship game three times with Clemson winning twice and Bama once.
Alabama maintains underlay odds. Much of their success has been due to their historic offense which has posted some of the best stats in the history of football this season. The Tide has been dominant, beating their opponents by an average of nearly 30 points per game.
Projected Number 1 NFL Draft pick Trevor Lawrence will have to play the game of his career to knock off the juggernaut that is 2020 Crimson Tide.
Heisman Hopefuls.
Because Alabama and Clemson have been so dominant this season, it should be no surprise that three of the four Heisman Trophy finalists play either for the Crimson Tide or the Tigers. Devonta Smith is the betting favorite.
If he hadn’t missed multiple games due to a coronavirus positive, Trevor Lawrence might be the pick to hoist the trophy - but as it played out Lawrence’s stats pale in comparison to Alabama’s Mac Jones.
It looked like Florida’s Kyle Trask might have the stats to win the award. The Florida QB threw the most TD passes. But Trask’s Gators lost four games in a shortened season and he struggled mightily in Wednesday night’s Cotton Bowl blowout loss to Oklahoma. The Florida QB threw three interceptions on the Gators’ first three drives essentially ending his Heisman campaign. Just this morning, Trask has declared himself eligible for the NFL Draft.
Look for either Devonta Smith or Mac Jones to strike the Heisman pose.
