п»їGamblers embrace new legalized sports betting in Michigan.
Since the summer, all of Michigan’s major sports teams have come back to action.
And while that may have brought great joy to sports lovers, the season for legalized sports gambling has just opened with authorization for online gaming and sports betting.
Legalization of online sports betting gives gambling access to anyone over 21 with an internet connection, according to the Michigan Gaming Control Board.
Some students at Michigan State University have placed online bets since it became legal to do so.
Zachary Reibitz is a junior from Walled Lake and just started using the online sports betting app DraftKings. He said he bets mainly on Ultimate Fighting Championship fights and finds online sports betting addictive.
“You’re always looking for good numbers, good lines to bet on. You can literally look at an app and bet a live line automatically,” Reibitz said.
Andrew Runge, a sophomore from Downers Grove, Illinois, is relatively new to sports betting. Runge started placing bets with FanDuel the day betting became legal.
“I’ve been gambling a lot this week,” Runge said.
He said he finds it entertaining to bet on sports. He also likes the social aspect of betting with friends to see who wins the most money.
Both Reibitz and Runge said they use their winnings for food purchases and take-out orders.
Even though some bettors may be excited at the new opportunity, Michael Burke, the executive director of the Michigan Association on Problem Gambling based in Portage, said that allowing online activity has a negative effect on gambling addicts.
Burke referred to a study by the Clinton Administration that examined casinos and gambling in 1996.
The study found that problems will double for people with predisposed gambling problems and who live within 60 miles of a casino.
Burke said the implications for addiction are higher because of the constant availability of sports gambling.
“Imagine reducing that radius from 60 miles to 6 to 10 inches,” Burke said.
There are currently seven active tribal casino partnerships with online sports betting platforms in Michigan:
� The Bay Mills Indian Community – Bay Mills Resort & Casinos in Brimley.
� Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians – Grand Traverse Resort & Casinos in Williamsburg.
� Hannahville Indian Community – Island Resort & Casino in Harris.
� Keweenaw Bay Indian Community – Ojibwa Casino Resort in Baraga.
� Little River Band of Ottawa Indians – Little River Casino Resort in Manistee.
� Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians – Kewadin Casinos in Sault Ste. Marie.
� Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians – Northern Water Casino Resort in Watersmeet.
Three Detroit-area casinos have partnered with different online sports betting platforms.
MGM Grand Detroit partnered with BetMGM/Roar Digital, MotorCity casino partnered with FanDuel and Greektown Casino partnered with Penn Sports Interactive/ Barstool Sportsbook.
According to the Gaming Control Board, the operators will file their monthly revenue report with the agency on Feb. 10 and on the 10th of each following month.


The Race To Legalize Online Sports Betting In NY: Cuomo Vs. State Democrats.
With New York facing a $15 billion budget shortfall from the coronavirus pandemic, online sports betting is viewed as one possible way to inject much-needed money into the state. New Jersey legalized online wagers in 2018, and earlier this month, Governor Andrew Cuomo included an online professional sports betting plan in his executive budget proposal that he claimed would raise $500 million in revenue for the state.
But many logistical hurdles remain. Cuomo’s proposal for legalization runs counter to what the Democratic supermajority in the state legislature is pitching. Some authorities are questioning the legality of the whole enterprise. And there are lingering concerns about gambling and addiction, particularly with the number of people sequestered at home and the opportunities that could be suddenly available to lose significant amounts of cash.
“I don’t see the governor’s proposal as workable in New York,” said Assemblyman Gary Pretlow, the chairman of the Committee on Racing and Wagering.
Right now, you can place horse racing bets on your smartphone through an app run by the not-for-profit corporation that oversees horse racing in New York’s three major tracks. Mobile betting for professional sports could theoretically function in a similar way. Currently, the servers for horse betting are located at the racetracks.
In both Cuomo and the legislature's proposals, the servers for mobile sports betting would be situated at places where bets are already taken, like casinos. The major overriding question is how many operators, or “skins,” as they are called in the industry, there will be, and who will get to profit.
Under Cuomo’s proposal, which still needs to be fleshed out further, the New York State Gaming Commission would be directed to solicit bids for a small number of mobile sports wagering operators. The system would be akin to how the state-run lottery functions, with possibly only one or a small number of operators overseeing sports betting. A single operator runs online sports betting in New Hampshire, Oregon, Rhode Island and the District of Columbia. Overall, sports betting is now legal in more than two dozen states.
Robert Mujica, Cuomo’s budget director, said earlier this month that the advantage of the state proposal would be the ability to maximize tax revenue. “The fundamental question is: if you want to support the bottom line for casinos or New York’s students. And the governor’s proposal chooses students,” Mujica told the Wall Street Journal . (An identical statement was sent to Gothamist from Freeman Klopott, a budget spokesman for Cuomo.)
It’s not clear yet what Cuomo’s tax rate would be for his online betting model, though Mujica has asserted that it would be enough to raise $500 million a year. The state legislative proposal, co-sponsored by Pretlow and the chairman of the State Senate’s Racing and Wagering Committee, Joseph Addabbo, puts the number closer to $100 million annually.
At first glance, that would seem to make Cuomo’s proposal the better one, given the potential for serious state budget cuts without new forms of revenue. But lawmakers and some gambling industry insiders aren’t so sure. In New Jersey, which is generally viewed as a success given the number of people who place bets, there are as many as 17 legal online sportsbooks.
New York’s legislature is looking to take a similar approach, believing their proposal has a better opportunity for growth�more operators can lead to more options for consumers and more interest in placing bets. Addabbo calls his legislation “inclusive,” because it would also allow for Native American casinos, casinos on state property, and off-track betting sites to participate.
“Competition bodes better for our residents and will drive up revenues than being a narrow state-run lottery kind of system,” Addabbo argued. “New York finds itself in a very odd position not being a leader. We are outside looking in. New York right now is a three-wheeled car limping along in the right lane. New Jersey and Pennsylvania are speeding by us.”
Bennett Liebman is a government lawyer in residence at Albany Law School who previously advised Cuomo as the deputy secretary for Gaming and Racing. He said the difference between the two models is a question of what is being prioritized: more tax revenue, or a better model, long-term, for consumers and gambling interests?
“It all depends on what you want in your market. If you want what the governor is seeking, which the draft is very general, you are looking for maximum tax revenue, you will give it to one or two groups and you are going to tax them at a very high rate,” Liebman said. “If you are looking to create a robust market to help out casinos and consumers, then you go with, or you are more inclined to go with, the legislative plan.”
Liebman called the Cuomo administration’s $500 million revenue figure for online sports betting “very, very high,” and predicted a few operators would dominate the space in New York, like DraftKings and FanDuel have done in New Jersey. Casinos, racetracks, and online gambling in total generated a little more than $300 million in tax revenue for New Jersey in 2020.
Even if New York reached Cuomo’s projections�let alone the far smaller figure from the state legislature�online sports betting would represent only a minuscule fraction of a state budget that was $177 billion last year. One question hanging over the debate is whether the united front fighting for mobile sports betting in New York�the currently existing casinos, and operators like DraftKings and FanDuel�would crumble if only a small number of them were selected to make money from sports betting.
According to a constitutional amendment passed in 2013, sports wagering in New York is currently allowed only in physical portions of its four existing commercial casinos and other facilities operated by Indian tribes. Cuomo and supporters of online sports betting believe their proposal will meet the requirements of the state constitution by locating the servers for the betting websites at the physical casinos.
Neil Murray, an Albany attorney who has sued to oppose gambling in the state, said there was a “legitimate, serious question” about the constitutionality of online sports betting.
“The problem right now is the constitutional amendment that was passed several years ago does carve out exceptions for gambling at casinos. The operative word is ‘at’ and what does that mean?”
Murray argued the way the amendment was proposed�an economic stimulus for destination casinos that would prevent the proliferation of gambling statewide�contradicts the arguments made for mobile sports betting today. “If you allow online gambling and people can gamble from their living rooms, then of course that destroys the whole purpose on which gambling was authorized on a limited basis to begin with,” he said. “Everybody is counting on collective amnesia.”
Pretlow, the state assemblyman, contended that his bill met the requirements of the state constitution but Cuomo’s would not if it chose to operate like the state lottery. The lottery is regarded as a game of pure chance with no skill involved, allowing it to circumvent a longtime prohibition on gambling in the state.
“The lottery has to be 100 percent chance. The lottery is not gambling,” Pretlow said. “It’s flip a coin, heads or tails, nothing in the middle. I think if the lottery were to handle sports betting, it would lead to a constitutional question.”

I’m a Sports Fan. But I Don’t Like to Bet on the Games. Here’s Why.

I go back a long way as a sports fan.
I started attending New York Rangers games at the old Madison Square Garden in the ’60s, when very few players wore helmets and at least one goalie didn’t bother donning a protective face mask.
I have attended games at 15 of the 30 Major League Baseball stadiums across North America.
I have watched countless NCAA basketball tournament games, and I was a huge fan of March Madness long before it assumed that moniker.
But I don’t enjoy betting on sports.
Call me a stick-in-the-mud, especially with the Super Bowl fast approaching on Feb. 3. These days, the world of sports gambling, which is growing quickly, is having the time of its life. So a distaste for betting is like being on the outside looking in at a particularly boisterous party.
What’s my problem? I find it very stressful knowing that a bet of mine rides on a player or a team I don’t like or follow. Whatever happened to just enjoying the beauty of sports? Many of these games have compelling story lines with drama, perseverance, and heart-pounding comebacks or collapses. There’s no need to add money lines, over-unders, and point spreads to the mix.
I’ll take my sports straight up, thank you.
I often feel in the minority these days. Many sports fans seem to need a wager to spice up sporting events. A year ago, the American Gaming Association predicted that about $4.7 billion would be bet on the Super Bowl�with only a tiny sliver, $138.5 million, through licensed sports books in Nevada.
Meanwhile, the gaming landscape is rapidly evolving, with online and mobile-phone platforms coming to the fore. A seminal event occurred last May when the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a law that had restricted sports betting in most states. It opened the door for a lot more legal betting on numerous sports across the country, as more states, outside of Nevada and led by New Jersey, entered the fray.
Major U.S. sports leagues like Major League Baseball, the National Football League, and the National Basketball Association support legalized sports betting, convinced that it’s better to have it out in the open where it can be regulated then to have it consigned to the shadows. And, of course, they see it as a way to boost revenues, too.
I’m not making a moral judgment here. I understand that it can be a thrill when a bet goes your way. But wagering is largely a fool’s errand over the long haul, a winning hand here or there notwithstanding.
Many fans consider themselves sports-gambling experts, only to see their picks�and their money�go up in smoke when the game is over. For many years, when I’ve ponied up $5 or $10 to enter the annual NCAA basketball tournament pool at the office, it has become pretty clear that knowledge of the sport usually doesn’t translate into winning. Invariably, someone would guess correctly on a few upsets, and maybe even back the right team all the way to the championship. I won such a pool outright one time, in 1988, thanks to Oklahoma, that year’s runner-up. Not exactly a stellar record on my part.

Some gambling information can be useful. Point spreads, in which oddsmakers try to level the playing field by giving the underdog a few extra points to lure more bettors to the wager, offer context to a coming contest. Heading into Sunday’s AFC Championship, the New England Patriots are three-point underdogs against the Kansas City Chiefs, the home team. If you bet on the Chiefs, you should know that the team has to win by more than three points for the wager to pay off.
That’s all well and good, but it’s still little more than guesswork. And today point spreads seem almost quaint.
Nowadays, there are various so-called proposition or prop bets�side bets that occur regarding an event that doesn’t affect the outcome. Who will score the first touchdown? How many points will teams score in each quarter?
A newer wrinkle is in-game wagering, which has been big in Europe and is emerging in the U.S. These bets take place as the game is unfolding. For example, which soccer player will score the next goal?
All of this leads me to wonder if the actual game, even one that’s thrilling, has taken a back seat to the gambling industrial complex. At this rate, in-game betting could offer wagers at Little League games on how many hot dogs a team will eat at the snack bar. Or how many ground balls will be hit to the shortstop in the bottom of the third. Or in which inning will the opposing coaches get into an argument over an umpire’s bad call�the possibilities are limitless.

Thousands of football fans will be placing their first legal Super Bowl bets in Illinois this weekend, and for most, a little action will make the big game just a bit more entertaining.
But, for some, it might open the door to regular betting, adding a quick dopamine hit to the regular season viewing experience. Maybe they’ll have to start budgeting for a new habit. Maybe they’ll have to start borrowing for it.
And, for a select few, it will get worse.
It’s already gotten worse for hundreds of people statewide since Illinois legislators approved a massive gaming expansion a year and a half ago, introducing legal sports wagering to a state that’s already packed with more places to gamble than Las Vegas.
The COVID-19 pandemic has made matters even worse, according to Luke, a Chicago-area problem gambler who was able to get out of the game nine years ago. Economic uncertainty and the general malaise of the quarantine lifestyle make gambling all the more enticing.
“It used to be that there was a stigma, and gambling was taboo. It was seedy,” said Luke, who asked that his full name not be used. “Now, you can do it on your phone. The companies that are doing it are publicly traded Fortune 500 companies.”

Calls to the state’s gambling disorder hotline more than doubled from 2019 to 2020, when 13,258 people reached out either there or online for information on a problem that experts say is out of sight but front of mind for a growing number of bettors and their families. The Illinois Department of Human Services, which aims to connect problem gamblers with counseling resources, calls that a “dramatic increase.”
In 2019, about 580 people received treatment for gambling disorders through state-sponsored programs across Illinois. That figure jumped past 1,000 in 2020, and experts say it doesn’t even cut the deck as only an estimated 3% of problem gamblers acknowledge they have a problem, and even fewer seek treatment.
Counseling gets boost with Illinois gambling expansion � but more addiction is sure to follow.
State’s all-in gambling expansion offers new temptation for those struggling to stay out.
Hundreds more took the more drastic step of banning themselves from casinos and the smartphone betting apps that have them hooked. About 13,500 people were enrolled in the self-exclusion program maintained by regulators at the Illinois Gaming Board in mid-2019, but that number has since shot past 14,000.
Many of those gamblers cite their temptations as coming from the state’s 10 casinos, three horse racing tracks and 7,233 bars, restaurants, gas stations and VFW halls that also house slot machines.
But since mobile sports betting launched last summer, Illinoisans can now gamble 24/7 from the comfort of home � and they’ve already lost more than $101 million doing so, according to Gaming Board revenue figures.

As the billion-dollar industry keeps growing, addiction counselors say they’re hearing more and more from young people glued to the sports betting apps whose ads saturate Illinois airwaves and billboards.
“It’s in your face all the time,” said Dr. Teresa Garate of the Gateway Foundation, a network of 16 addiction treatment centers statewide. “It’s becoming a part of everyday life. Everyone accepts it, but it’s a serious trigger for some.”
That’s the case for Anthony, a 36-year-old recovering problem gambler from southwest suburban Tinley Park, who said he often finds himself changing the station as sports talk radio hosts dissect the latest betting lines.
“It’ll just be too much, it’s too close,” Anthony said. “Even though I don’t think it’ll lead me down there, I know better than to let my mind start thinking like that.”

Elizabeth Thielen, a senior director at Nicasa Behavioral Health Services, said she’s seen yearly increases of people seeking help for gambling disorders across Chicago’s north suburbs, but a “real burst” of clients has sought them out in the past nine months.
“The ages we’re seeing are trending younger, and I think that’s directly related to sports betting,” Thielen said. “At the same time, I feel hopeful because you have young people showing a surprising level of insight to find help.”

While there’s been an influx of new problem gamblers, the potential for relapse is an equal concern for Dr. Anita Pindiur, executive director of the Way Back Inn, a Maywood treatment center. About 10 former patients have already returned to the Way Back Inn for counseling this football season alone.
“Sometimes, we forget how quickly it can happen,” Pindiur said. “These things are advertised in a way that they’re fun and entertaining, and they should be. But often there is no set of limits or recognition of the limits until we get our credit-card bill, or somebody points it out.”
Illinois sports betting market could rival Nevada’s, analysts say.

Besides financial ruin, experts say people who suffer from gambling addiction are more likely to suffer from substance abuse issues, turn to crime or even attempt suicide.
“I was losing everything,” said Patrick, a 35-year-old Niles man who’s 13 months removed from his last bet. “I’d have a paycheck on a Friday afternoon and it would be gone by Friday night. My relationships with my family and whoever I was dating, it just got out of control. I was lying, I was stealing, I was doing all these crazy things.”
As sports betting has been brought out of the shadows into everyday life, counselors say their challenge now is removing the stigma around seeking treatment for addiction � and they say they’re making progress through increased awareness. That’s been boosted with the help of $7 million set aside in the state’s gambling expansion law in grants for treatment centers, which have used a lot of that money to bolster advertising.

“One of the biggest barriers to treatment is stigma, especially for gambling,” said Garate, from the Gateway Foundation. “People don’t see it as a real addiction. It is, and help is out there.”
Just how many people need help is unclear. Experts generally estimate that between 2% and 5% of the population deal with gambling disorder, which would project to about 635,000 people across Illinois, including about 136,000 in Chicago.

But there’s been no comprehensive study of the problem in Illinois since 1999, well before video slots dotted the walls at thousands of establishments across the state and sportsbooks were accessible anywhere that had a cellphone signal.
“You have to believe those numbers are different now,” Thielen said.
The state Department of Human Services is out to find out just how much they’ve shifted with the onslaught of gambling options. The agency launched a $500,000 study last fall surveying treatment providers, problem gamblers and others to gauge the prevalence of addiction, especially among populations considered vulnerable or marginalized due to race, culture, economic or social disparity.
“We want to know what’s the challenge, and what should we look for,” said David Jones, who directs the department’s Substance Use Prevention and Recovery Division. “Then, you can start to bring more evidence-based solutions on a size consistent with the scale of the challenge.”
