п»їThe Ultimate Guide to Sports Betting.
In 2018, the United States Supreme Court’s decision in the Murphy v. NCAA case opened the door for legalized sports gambling. Immediately after that decision, the state legislatures went to work and many passed laws making wagering legal.
Though now legal in many states, sports betting enthusiasts found ways to gamble for years. Now, with legal casino and online operations growing in rapid numbers, it’s never been easier for a player to find action.
Are you a sports fan? Do you have the itch for some action but are not familiar with sports betting rules? Don’t be a square and bet before you know what you’re doing. That’s an easy way to lose money.
Check out our comprehensive guide on sports betting to educate yourself.
It Seems So Simple.
For as long as there have been contests, someone bet on the outcome. From ancient Greece to present-day Las Vegas, sports and sports betting fit like a hand in a glove.
Many sports fans long consider it their favorite pastime. And to the inexperienced, sports wagering seems so simple. You pick who wins the game.
If you win, you make money. Yes, if it were only that easy.
The truth is, it’s not. You only have to look at how much revenue sportsbooks pull in every year to know how hard it is to make money.
Do you think bookmakers would bother operating on the wrong side of the law for so many years if sports gambling wasn’t profitable for them?
No, they wouldn’t. You need to know how complicated betting is before you can dip your toe into the gambling market. You don’t need to learn complicated strategy overnight, but you need foundational knowledge of the basics before you begin.
Important Terms.
Sports betting has its terminology you need to know. Though the list of sports betting jargon is long, to understand the rest, you need to learn these terms.
Favorite.
When bookmakers set their numbers, they decide who they think will win the game and by how much.
A favorite is who the bookmaker thinks will win the game, and receives a (-) on the board. A better receives less return for a winning bet on a favorite because they are more likely to win.
Underdog.
Players receive a greater return on winning underdog bets because these “dogs” are less likely to win.
Every bet has at least two sides (there are some with three, but we’ll talk about those later).
Each side is given a corresponding number decided by a bookmaker. These sides exist in all three basic bet types.
A line is all the numbers that correspond with a bet. This includes the full game or any specific time interval.
Types of Bets.
Three basic bets serve as the foundation for all sports betting. When you walk into a casino sportsbook or pull up the app for the first time, you will see a series of numbers that are confusing if you don’t know what they mean.
Here we will explain the three types of bets and what the corresponding numbers mean.
Moneyline.
A moneyline bet is a bet for a team or individual to win a contest. It’s the most simple bet to make.
This is easy to explain with a real-life example. Say you’re a college football fan and you want to make the championship game more interesting with a wager. You have a good feeling that Ohio State will beat Alabama, so you want to bet them to win.
What do those numbers mean for you? If you bet $100 on underdog Ohio State, you win $225. However, to win $100 on Alabama, you must wager $286.
As you can see, you can win more money betting on dogs. That doesn’t mean you should always play them.
Spread.
Sports bettors and bookmakers wouldn’t make much money if they only offered win/lose moneyline bets. If you’re a long-time sports fan you know that sometimes the talent discrepancy between two teams is immense.
Spread bets, also known as puck-line bets in hockey and run-line bets in baseball, are how you bet on these games. Every single contest has a corresponding spread.
With a spread bet, you bet on a team to win over a certain amount of points or lose by less than a certain amount of points. The bookmaker determines these numbers (in hockey and baseball these numbers are a standard 1.5, though they will move).
You have that feeling about Ohio State, but you’re not positive they’ll win. You do think it will be a close game.
What does this mean? If you think Ohio State will lose by less than 9 points or win the game, you’ll win your bet at -110. That means to win $100 on that bet you’ll bet $110.
If you bet Alabama at -9 -110, that means Alabama must win the game by more than 9 points for you to win.
Total.
To win an over bet, Ohio State and Alabama must combine to score more than 75.5 points. To win an under bet, these two teams must score less than 75.5.
The standard odds on these bets are -110, but they are subject to change.
Exotic Bets.
Now that you know what the three basic bets are, you can start building exotic bets that are based on them.
Parlay.
A parlay is two or more bets combined to increase your winnings. Sportsbooks and casinos have different rules on parlays and how you can play them.
The only catch? You must win all your bets in a parlay to win. If you go 8 for 9 on a parlay, you lose.
Teaser.
Sportsbooks allow you to adjust the spreads or point totals on parlay bets through teasers. For football, they offer 6, 6.5, and 7 point teasers. This means your Ohio State and Pittsburgh parlay will have more favorable numbers.
Because you’re given more favorable numbers, the book reduces your payout.
A 3-way bet is a moneyline bet with three sides. You can bet on Ohio State to win, Alabama to win, or a tie.
These bets are offered for the full regulation not counting any overtime, or for set intervals of the game like quarters or halves.
You’ll find that the moneyline numbers on a 3-way yield higher payouts. They’re harder to win. If you bet Ohio State on a 3-way line to win the first half and the teams tie, you lose.
Round-Robin.
If you do this, you have three separate two-team parlay combinations you wager on. You have Ohio State and Pittsburgh, Ohio State and San Francisco, and Pittsburgh and San Francisco.
If only one parlay hits, you lost $200 but won $265. That means the book pays out $65.
The Logic Behind the Lines.
To understand sports gambling, you have to understand how bookies and sportsbooks make money .
The primary way sportsbooks make money is through the “juice” or the “vig.” The juice is a commission the book keeps on each bet. When you place a $100 bet on the Ohio State spread, you get your $100 back plus $91 in winnings.
On the other side, people who bet $100 on Alabama lose their $100. This $9 difference, or vig, is kept by the book.
Because the book profits primarily on the juice, they set their lines to encourage even play on both sides.
That Ohio State vs. Alabama spread of 9 points doesn’t mean that a bookie believes Alabama will win by that much or more. They come to that number by determining what margin will entice an equal number of players to make bets on either side.
Understanding Line Movement.
What happened?
Betting lines are not static. When bookmakers release their initial lines, they begin to take bets. They set the original number to encourage play on both sides.
Experienced gamblers do not live in a vacuum. They have their ideas about what will happen in any given game. These preferences show with how much money comes in on either side.
If money comes in heavy on the Alabama side at -9, the bookmaker will move that number up to get play on Ohio State. These movements can come from consistent public play or a large single wager.
When you bet on sports, you have to change how you think about picking games. Winning sports betting is not as simple as beating the sportsbook number. You play the sportsbook and fellow gamblers.
How to Win.
Winning at sports gambling takes a lot of work and a lot of skill. The best sports bettors often top out at 55%. Given that even the best still lose 45% of the time, you have to expect you’ll lose a lot more when you start.
Sports gambling is about so much more than picking who wins. You have to keep your eyes on the numbers and you have to do a ton of research. Stat books and statistical probability are your best friends.
Once you learn how to interpret the numbers and statistics, you may see some success. Don’t bet on it.
Sports betting is, at best, a nice hobby and a great way to generate interest in a game. It’s best to start slow and have fun.
Sports Betting Will Be Here Forever.
If there is a game or a contest anywhere in the world, be sure someone bets on it. From professional football to Ukrainian table tennis, gamblers will find a way to lay action.
Become familiar with the terms and the rules of sports betting. The best way to lose money is to give it to a bookmaker or casino with uninformed wagers.

The Ultimate Guide to Sports Betting in 2019.
Senior Editor, Complex Sports.
Sometimes common sense prevails, which is exactly what happened in May 2018 when the Supreme Court knocked down the archaic and utterly ridiculous 1992 federal law that outlawed gambling on sports.
Since then, gambling has emerged from the shadows as more and more states continue to legalize it and mainstream media outlets embrace content and greenlight programming around a formerly taboo subject. Case in point: arguably the best thing ESPN does these days is the “Bad Beats” segment on SportsCenter with SVP and numerous networks, like the Worldwide Leader and Fox Sports, have gambling specific shows airing daily. There’s more gambling content than everвЂâ€Complex Sports has been known to bring you some on occasionвЂâ€but what if you’re looking to wade into the waters and start betting on your favorite sports but don’t know what you’re doing and need a little primer?
If you’re hellbent on throwing down some action on the games you’re already going to be watching, especially with the start of the NFL season right around the corner, we thought we’d offer up a our version of Sports Gambling 101 for any novices out there. Ten states now offer some kind of legalized sports gambling with more to come this year. If you live someplace that doesn’t, you can still find a local bookie who will gladly take your action or you can try with an off-shore sportsbook likely based in the Caribbean or Central America to get your kicks.
Regardless of what route you want to take, here’s a very basic education on all the things you need to know before you start putting dollars down on the big game. Three years ago, as an ode to Biggie, we brought you the 10 Crack Commandments of Sports Gambling. It’s still relevant today but goes into slightly greater depth about proper sports gambling etiquette (yes, it exists) and other behaviors than what you’ll find below. So read up and godspeed, future sports gamblers, and do not blame us if you end up on the streets.
It’s Entertainment, Not Income.
If you’ve never placed a wager on a sporting event before, you need to know that while the goal is of course to win and pad your pocket with extra cash, gambling on sports should never be considered an additional stream of income. Pros, who use extensive power rankings and complicated algorithms, can make a living off of it, but you’re not a pro. Yeah, you can get on a hot streak and yeah, you can occasionally hit on a bet that pays off big thanks to astronomical odds. But the game is rigged in favor of the house and they’ll always have an advantage since you’re basically paying a tax every time you place a wager and you don’t actually know more than anyone else when it comes to sports. That’s just reality.
You’re probably going to lose more than you win because sports is incredibly unpredictable and stupid things happen thanks to the arbitrary bounce of a ball. Treat gambling on sports like entertainmentвЂâ€set aside some dough like it’s your bar money or for an upcoming sneaker dropвЂâ€so you don’t end up homeless after stupidly putting your rent money on the Patriots covering a 16.5-point spread on the road.
Know the Terms.
You know what the spread is? The total? Moneyline? What a parlay is? Did you take the points or are you going to lay ‘em? Gambling has very specific terms and knowing the lingo not only gives you instant credibility, it’s going to save you money and heartache.
I’m not going to tell you what all of them are hereвЂâ€there are plenty of sports gambling glossaries that you can GoogleвЂâ€but I can’t emphasize enough that you should know the baseline terms before you place your first wager. Start with the ones above and as you become more comfortable gambling you can begin to broaden your horizonsвЂâ€or descend down a darkhole depending on people’s perspectives.
Bet With Your Head, Not Your Heart.
Just because you watch your team every week and read all about them and know the precise defensive scheme the new coordinator implemented during training camp doesn’t mean you should blindly place a wager on them every Sunday. Yes, knowing your favorite team as intimately as your significant other can be an advantage, but the quickest way to lose a lot and despise your squad in the process is to keep throwing down dollars on your team to cover or win outright just because you want to “support” them. That’s lunacy. Your team isn’t going to win every game. And they sure as hell ain’t going to cover every game. Pick your spots so you don’t end up broke and hate your heroes.
Stay Away From Parlays.
Parlays are when you combine two bets into one wager. Both bets have to hit for you to win money. Newsflash: it ain’t easy picking two separate winners when you’re starting out as a gambler. Hell, it ain’t that easy when you’ve been doing it for years. Parlays pay off bigger than a single game wager, but that’s because the odds of hitting it are a hell of a lot longer. Yes, you’ll occasionally read about the person who hit a six-team parlay and collected $100,000. But for every one person who hits on a huge parlay, there’s hundreds of thousands who would’ve been a lot richer gambling much more conservatively.
Props Are For Suckers.
Prop bets are the ones you hear about for the Super Bowl, like how long the national anthem will last (always take the over) or what color Gatorade will the winning coach be doused with (clear or yellow have the most wins). NFL regular season games don’t have bets like that, but sportsbooks usually put out plenty of player props like how many yards will Todd Gurley rush for or how many 3-pointers will Steph Curry hit. The vigorish (aka the juice, or the percentage taken out your winnings by the house) is usually higher/more punitive of those so the payoff isn’t as great.
Don’t Hedge.
Playing both sides of a game is whack. Don’t be one of those guys that puts a bunch of money on a team but tries to limit their liability by putting a smaller sum on the other squad so you don’t get taken to the cleaners should your big bet fail. When you become a truly seasoned gambler maybe you can try to middle a game (look it up) but that’s way different than hedging a bet. Don’t do it. Be an honorable gambler.
When It Seems Too Good To Be True, It Probably Is.
Basically, if the public is absolutely pounding one side of a betвЂâ€say the Chiefs are only favored by a few points at home over one of the worst teams in the leagueвЂâ€and it seems like the easiest money of your life, that’s when you’re in for a rude awakening. Most gamblers are squares, or amateurs, and will largely place bets on the favorite and the over because they want to believe the better team will win (and cover) and root for points to be scored because that’s more fun than watching a 12-9 field goal fest. Discipline yourself early on to take the underdogs and chances are you’ll come out way ahead of another gambler mostly throwing down on favorites.
Never Pay Someone For Their Selections.
Forking over money to a sports gambling subscription service to get their daily or weekly picks is the definition of being a sucker. Newsflash: those guys who claim they hit 72 percent of their bets know nothing more than you do and are putting one over on all the desperate, pathetic degenerate gamblers out there who really should be in a meeting rather than placing another wager. You should be your own handicapper and when you become more familiar and comfortable gambling on sports, you’ll be able to handicap games and better judge the value of a spread or total put out by a sportsbook, ideally taking advantage of any bad lines you see. The guys running those pick subscription services are nothing but a bunch of frauds. And, real talk, what’s the fun in paying someone else to pick a game for you?

UFC Vegas 18 Betting Guide.
Jeff Fox February 4, 2021.
I’ve been hesitating writing this week’s column since fights are dropping off the card and being replaced seemingly by the minute, but it’s time to bite the bullet and give you my UFC Vegas 18 Betting Guide. Hopefully when you read this it’ll still be somewhat relevant, but no promises (you can check out the updated fight lineup right here in case things change).
UFC Vegas 18 Betting Guide.
I’m coming out of the gate hot here and grabbing a live dog. Me and my MMA Gambling Podcast co-host Daniel Vreeland can’t understand why Alistair Overeem is the underdog in his headlining fight against Alexander Volkov. He’s the better striker and grappler, as well as being the smarter fighter. Go get that sweet, sweet plus money.
Cory Sandhagen (-415) vs Frankie Edgar.
While Cory Sandhagen is my pick to win this fight, as he is 11 years Frankie Edgar’s junior, as well as being bigger than him, I’m not going anywhere near a number as high as -415 for this matchup. It’s entirely possible that Edgar fights smart and uses his strong wrestling to win a decision victory.
I’m coming out guns a-blazing with two underdogs in my first three picks. Kape is the former Rizin Bantamweight Champion in Japan, where he fought many top level fighters. He’s also larger than the UFC veteran Pantoja. I’m thinking he’s worthy of a bet this week in his UFC debut.
Cody Stamann (-480) vs Askar Askar.
So now the UFC has an Askar Askarov and an Askar Askar. That’s not going to get confusing at all. I don’t know much about this debuting Askar, who will be taking this fight on very late notice, but I do know that Cody Stamann is too good to beat on short notice. Stamann is the pick.
Beneil Dariush (-115) vs Carlos Diego Ferreira.
This fight is a toss up in my mind, and on the odds boards as well, as it is currently a -115 pick ’em. Dariush beat CDF the first time the two fought in 2014, and is on a nice four-fight win streak, knocking out his last two opponents, and submitting his two victims before that. Should be a fun, competitive fight.
Michael Johnson (-210) vs Clay Guida.
Yes, Clay Guida is still fighting in the UFC. And he’s not looking like he’s slowing down. However, I like Michael Johnson in this battle as he’s bigger, younger and faster than Guida. Could be a fun, action-packed fight.
Mike Rodriguez (-245) vs Danilo Marques.
It’s hard to financially back an athlete whose nickname is “Slow”, but I like Slow Mike to win this fight against Danilo Marques. You know, the usual reasons – bigger, younger.
Timur Valiev (-370) vs Martin Day.
Day is taking this fight last minute, which is a red flag for betting on him. Not to mention he’s lost all three of his UFC fights thus far and Valiev is the superior fighter.
Devonte Smith (-300) vs Justin Jaynes.
This is a last minute, catchweight (160 pound) fight. I told you this fight card was changing by the minute – another late matchup here. Smith is bigger, younger and the superior striker, so I see him bouncing back from losing his last fight and getting the W on Saturday.
This week’s UFC Vegas 18 Betting Guide is all about the live dogs, and Joselyne Edwards is one. She burned us in her UFC debut just a few weeks back, winning a late replacement fight against Wu Yanan, where she looked very good. This is yet another short notice fight for her against Karol Rose, who she’ll be bigger than.
Molly McCann (-160) vs Lara Procopio.
We’ve got to back someone nicknamed “Meatball Molly”, right?! Plus I think McCann can outwrestle Procopio and is a strong enough striker to get herself a decision victory.
Youssef Zalal (-250) vs Seung Woo Choi.
Zalal is another late replacement fighter who I’m betting on this week, stats be damned. He’s the superior striker, is younger, and has won three of his four UFC fights.
Ode Osbourne (-200) vs Jerome Rivera.
Oh look – another last minute fight. Rivera will be stepping in very late to this matchup, at featherweight, which is two weight classes above his normal flyweight division. Osbourne is the pick.
