Not only is New Jersey the new No. 1 state in the nation for sports betting handle, it’s covering a big spread of $1.7 billion over the runner-up Nevada.
Nevada’s sportsbooks handled $588.4 million from bettors in the month of December, an increase of 3 percent from December 2019, and they won $40.6 million, an increase of 11.7 percent, for a hold of 6.9 percent compared to 6.36 percent last December.
As expected, the figures were down for 2020 as a whole due to the COVID-19 pandemic shutting down the major sports for several months. Brick-and-mortar casinos were also shuttered from mid-March through early June, though that helped spur more wagering through mobile apps. Nevada sportsbooks handled $4.3 billion for the year, a decrease of 18.4 percent from 2019, while the overall win was $262.8 million, down 20.2 percent (note: despite the overall downturn, football set records with an annual handle of $1.9 billion, up 2.7 percent, and win of $127.7 million, up 4.3 percent). Mobile wagering accounted for 57.1 percent of the wagers, though that hit 60 percent in December.

Those numbers pale in comparison to New Jersey, which has taken over as the top state for sports betting due to its much broader population base. New Jersey, which has only been in the legal sports betting industry since 2018 when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the federal ban, handled an all-time record (for any month) $996.2 million in December, with $929.3 million being bet via mobile apps for a whopping 93 percent. The Garden State handled $6 billion overall in 2020 to break Nevada’s all-time annual record of $5.3 billion set in 2019, and Jersey’s overall win was nearly 50 percent higher at another all-time record of $393.2 million.
In addition to more prevalent mobile betting being helpful during a pandemic, New Jersey enjoys another advantage in that its large neighbor, New York, does not yet offer wagering via app.
Nevada still ranked No. 2 in the nation in 2020 sports betting handle. Here’s the top 5 (though note that Illinois hasn’t released its complete 2020 figures yet and it’s projected to be around $1.5 billion to push past Colorado at No. 5):
$6.0 billion, New Jersey.
$4.3 billion, Nevada.
$3.5 billion, Pennsylvania.
$1.8 billion, Indiana.
$1.2 billion, Colorado.
But while there might be some shuffling downlist, one thing is clear, New Jersey is No. 1 on the money list and it’s not even close.


New Jersey Smashes Nevada’s All-Time Record for Yearly Sports Betting Handle.

Ninety years ago, when Nevada legalized gambling, it began its run as the betting capitol of the United States.
That title, at least as far as sports gambling goes, was stripped on Wednesday, when numbers published by the New Jersey Department of Gaming Enforcement revealed that the Garden State had broken Nevada’s yearly record for sports betting handle, capped off by $996.3 million in December, an all-time record for a single month.
Bettors in New Jersey wagered $6 billion in 2020, obliterating the $5.4 billion record set by Nevada just last year. That includes $4.1 billion in bets in the last five months alone for N.J, just $400 million less than the state bet on sports in the Garden State in all of 2019.
With December’s numbers, New Jersey now has the top five most bet months in U.S. sports gambling history.
So how did New Jersey manage to beat the incumbents in dollars bet every single month of last year, and smash the yearly record?
Five million more residents helps, but so does the ability to register for more than 20 mobile sportsbooks from any location in the state. Nevada, which has yet to report its December handle but has no chance to beat New Jersey, still relies on in-person registration to open accounts. In December, New Jersey reported that 93.2% of the money bet were made online.
That had a huge impact during COVID-19, as Nevada’s in-person casino capacity dwindled. The influx of tourism, which Nevada so relies on to boost its numbers, also dropped precipitously.
Through the first 11 months of 2020, visitor volume to the state was down 56%, according to the Nevada Visitors and Convention Bureau.
On the flip side, New Jersey benefited greatly from neighboring New York failing to launch mobile gambling to the state, something that is on the table for 2021 thanks in part to a $15 billion deficit exacerbated by the COVID crisis.
New Jersey was expected to one day challenge Nevada for the sports betting handle title, though no one could have dreamed it would come this quickly. New Jersey sportsbooks won $398.5 million in 2020, also a yearly record for any state, and up nearly $100 million from last year.
It was New Jersey in 2014 that first challenged the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) of 1992 that grandfathered in only Montana, Delaware and Oregon, along with Nevada, to make decisions at the state level as to whether they wanted to have sports gambling or not. New Jersey challenged PASPA until it made its way to the Supreme Court.
In May 2018, New Jersey prevailed when the Supreme Court decided any state could choose their fate as far as sports gambling goes.
New Jersey came out of the gate quickly, with retail sportsbooks at the Meadowlands and at Monmouth Park, and offered the most open ended system that created an influx of sports books to the state.


Nevada sportsbooks’ handle down $1B in 2020; football sets records.
Football betting proved to be pandemic-proof, as the state’s sportsbooks set all-time records for football betting handle ($1.9 billion) and football win ($127.7 million).
Nevada sportsbooks took $4.3 billion in bets in 2020 and won $262.8 million, according to figures released Thursday by the Gaming Control Board.
The sports betting handle, or amount wagered, was down $1 billion from 2019. The decrease was because of several factors stemming from the coronavirus pandemic, which caused the sports world to stop in March and the state’s books to close for almost three months.
“We were closed, and the reduced seasons in hockey, basketball and baseball, and the cancellation of the (NCAA men’s) college basketball tournament, were all factors,” Sunset Station sportsbook director Chuck Esposito said.
Betting on football proved to be pandemic-proof, as the state’s books set all-time records for football betting handle ($1.9 billion) and football win ($127.7 million).
Wagers made on mobile apps accounted for 57.1 percent ($2.5 billion) of the state’s 2020 handle and were instrumental in setting the football records.
“More people know about the mobile app than ever before, and that’s why you saw the handle for the NFL go up year over year,” Westgate sportsbook director John Murray said. “We’re starting to push close to 70 percent. Before the pandemic, it was more like 50-50. It’s not quite there yet, but it’s coming soon.”
The books finished the year strong, setting a record for December handle at $588.4 million.
Despite the pandemic, the books produced the fourth-highest handle in Nevada history.
