A long and unexpected football season has finally hit the playoffs. The Kentucky High School Athletic Association opens its postseason this weekend. Some teams have byes due to teams opting out of the postseason due to COVID concerns. Here is a look at the seven games that will start off the brackets.
Dayton (5-3) at Ludlow (3-5)
What to watch : The Greendevils are already guaranteed their first winning season since 2007 when they went 8-3 in the regular season. Ludlow won 22-12 on Oct. 3 at Ludlow. The Panthers rushed for 198 yards, 151 of them from Braxton Newborn, who scored three touchdowns. Newborn is one of the leading rushers in Northern Kentucky with 1,488 yards and 22 scores. Dayton rushed for 147 yards but not complete scoring drives as efficiently as the Panthers. Dayton rushes for 192 yards per game and scores 22 points per contest. Ludlow has the more potent passing attack, as Austin Daniels has thrown for 1,319 yards and nine TDs. Ludlow scores 29 points per contest.

Lloyd Memorial (3-2) at Newport (4-3)
What to watch : The Wildcats beat the Juggernauts 19-13 Oct. 9 in Erlanger. Newport’s Ethan Jefferson threw for 188 yards and the Wildcats prevailed despite the Juggernauts limiting them to 15 rushing yards. Ethan Spaulding rushed for 122 yards for the Juggernauts and rushed for 560 yards and six touchdowns in just five games, over 112 per game. Newport rallied late to win the first time, and this game could go down to the wire.

Shawnee (1-5) at Walton-Verona (5-4)
What to watch : The Bearcats beat the visiting Golden Eagles from Louisville 47-6 in Verona, part of WV’s 30-game winning streak against district opponents. WV rushes for 184 yards and scores 24 points per game. Dawson Catlett is WV’s leading tackler, including 14.5 for loss.
Picks : WV (Weber, Dermer, Springer, Newton).
Boyd County (3-4) at Holmes (7-2)
What to watch : This could end up being one of the most competitive 4 vs.1 games in the state. Holmes has won six straight and is looking for its second straight eight-win season. The Bulldogs have been in quarantine since the end of the regular season and will have only a day or two of practice before facing Boyd at 4 p.m. Saturday. Holmes won 26-15 at Boyd Oct. 9, rushing for 196 yards but allowing 271 to the Lions. The Lions’ rushing attack is spread out, with three backs having 500 or more yards. Holmes is led by senior twins Quantez and Tayquan Calloway. Tez has rushed for 1,024 yards and eight scores, and Tay for 773 and 10. Holmes rushed for 271 yards per game overall.

Cooper (3-5) at Covington Catholic (7-1)
What to watch : The reigning 5A state champion Colonels will look to bounce back from their first regular-season loss in over four years. CovCath lost 29-28 at Lexington Catholic Nov. 6 in a thrilling finish. CovCath had only allowed 41 points in its first seven games, including 10 points in its final five, before allowing 29 to LexCath. The Colonels had similar matchup problems last year, allowing 38 of 61 points during the regular season to LexCath. CovCath handed Cooper a 41-0 loss on Sept. 25, racking up 395 yards of offense to 97 for the Jaguars. Cooper senior Jeremiah Lee only had two rushes in that game and figures to be a bigger factor in this contest. The athletic and speedy Lee has 911 rushing yards and eight scores this year.

Highlands (4-5) at Conner (3-3)
What to watch : Highlands was in top form when it rolled into Hebron Oct. 3, winning 36-0 over the Cougars, but the Bluebirds have struggled since. The Bluebirds suffered a three-game losing streak, falling to CovCath, Cooper and Moeller by a combined score of 140-35 before ending the regular season with a 34-21 win over Campbell County. Conner beat Cooper 27-20 after that, gaining the two seed in a three-way tiebreaker as a result. Conner also struggled against CovCath (40-0) then lost to Ryle 34-14. This will be only Conner’s fourth game in seven weeks since the first Highlands contest. Highlands sophomore Charlie Noon has had a strong debut season under center, throwing for 806 yards and seven TDs, and rushing for 750 and six. Conner will have to look for answers on offense to have an edge in the rematch.

Simon Kenton (3-6) at Dixie Heights (4-3)
What to watch: Dixie Heights defeated the Pioneers 28-14 Oct. 8 in Edgewood to earn the home game in this rematch. Dixie rushed for 202 yards in that game, 108 from Pierce Rohlman. Logan Landers threw for 181. Landers has thrown for 1,178 yards and six TDs, and Rohlman has rushed for 579. SK rushed for 272 yards in that game, 180 from sophomore RB Jayden Lawson. Lawson has 818 rushing yards and eight TDs. QB Chase Crone has thrown for 1,698 yards and rushed for 523. SK has lost six of seven overall, with the lone win over Campbell County. SK has lost to Ryle, CovCath, and Bryan Station. Dixie will go four weeks between games because of COVID cancellations, having not played since beating Campbell County Oct. 24.
