The newly-expanded Western Athletic Conference will have a larger membership for the 2021 season, according to a report from Yahoo Sports.
Eastern Kentucky, Jacksonville State and Central Arkansas will play the 2021 football season as part of the WAC. All three will then move on to the Atlantic Sun Conference starting in 2022.
The decision will give the WAC nine football members for the 2021 season: Eastern Kentucky, Jacksonville State, Central Arkansas, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Lamar, Abilene Christian, Dixie State and Tarleton. More importantly, seven teams are eligible for the FCS Playoffs, which means the WAC will meet the NCAA requirement for an auto-bid. Tarleton and Dixie State are transitioning members from Division II.
The WAC's decision comes as the league brings back football for the first time since 2012. The league is expediting the return after the four new schools from the Southland decided to enter the conference in time for the 2021 season instead of the 2022 season as many expected.
The decision allows the WAC to take its time in finding a sixth playoff-eligible program in time for the 2022 season without costing its new members a playoff shot. Sam Houston especially has been a mainstay in the FCS Playoffs over the past several seasons. The Bearkats and Central Arkansas will likely fight with SFA for the auto-bid in 2021.
Jacksonville State and Eastern Kentucky are joining from the Ohio Valley Conference, while Central Arkansas is joining the "Texas Four" from the Southland Conference.
Starting in 2022, the WAC will welcome Southern Utah as its seventh football school. The league has also been forward about the fact that it hopes to add an eighth football school in time for the 2022 football season, ideally in the Texas corner of the conference map.

Four Texas colleges officially join Western Athletic Conference.

The Western Athletic Conference will add four Texas FCS programs on July 1, 2022: Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston, Lamar and Abilene Christian. All four programs are leaving the Southland Conference.
Texas Football first reported the possibility that the four would join the conference in December.
In addition, Southern Utah will join the conference as a football-playing member in 2022. Tarleton and Dixie State joined the WAC as a transitioning FCS Independent member in 2020 and will finally have a football home.
“I cannot overstate my level of excitement in making this expansion announcement,” WAC commissioner Jeff Hurd said in a statement, “The opportunity to bring five quality institutions into the conference, to significantly strengthen the WAC’s national basketball brand and other championship sport profiles, and to bring football back under the WAC umbrella is one that made sense.”
In order to streamline conference travel, the league will be separated into two divisions, tentatively called the Southwest and West Divisions. The Southwest will feature all the Texas schools. Many non-revenue sports will focus almost solely within division play.
“The ability to be able to have a divisional alignment is imperative,” Abilene Christian president Dr. Phil Schubert said. “It helps us stay efficient and allows us to concentrate our efforts in the state of Texas. That is a big deal for us. It was a major part of the consideration that allowed us to feel good about this move.”
Discussions about entering the WAC started in March 2020 between Texas schools after Tarleton opted to transition to Division I. The pandemic exacerbated a financial gap between the Texas Four and the rest of the schools in the Southland Conference.
Schubert noted that ACU would not have made the decision to leave if the other three schools were not on board. The decision allows for historic rivalries to continue, including The Battle of the Piney Woods between Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin.
In order for an FCS league to be eligible for an auto-bid to the FCS Playoff, the league must have six eligible teams. Right now, the league sits at four eligible and two transitioning members, with a fifth in Southern Utah joining in 2022. The league will move quickly to explore adding at least one more football member in order to gain an auto-bid by the 2022 football season, preferably on the Southwest Division side of the conference.
With the four new additions, the WAC has more Texas members than any other Division I conference in the state. In addition to the five football-playing members, the WAC is also home to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. The Vaqueros are exploring the possibility of adding a football program.
“Texas is a big state – we’re not under any illusion that we’re going to take anything away from the University of Texas, Texas A&M,” Hurd said. “The point is we’re trying to increase our visibility throughout the state. It helps from a recruiting standpoint, not just student-athletes but also general student body.”
In addition to the football side, the WAC hopes to become a top-12 college basketball league that competes for multiple bids every year. Stephen F. Austin and Abilene Christian have both experienced great success as basketball programs in the Southland Conference.
With the Texas Four heading to the WAC, Houston Baptist and UIW remain the only two Texas football schools in the Southland Conference. The WAC has not sponsored football since 2012.

WAC Announces Expansion, Plans to Reinstate Football.
HOUSTON – Western Athletic Conference Commissioner Jeff Hurd today announced membership invitations issued by the conference’s Board of Directors to five universities have been accepted effective July 1, 2022.
Hurd also announced the WAC’s intention to reinstate football at the Football Championship Subdivision level beginning with the 2022 season, with the possibility of WAC football beginning as soon as the 2021-22 season.
Four of the institutions – Abilene Christian University, Lamar University, Sam Houston State University and Stephen F. Austin State University – are in Texas and currently are members of the Southland Conference. The fifth, Southern Utah University, is a member of the Big Sky Conference.
The additions will create a 13-team conference that will be divided into two divisions for team sports other than football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball. One division will consist of the Texas-based institutions including current WAC members Tarleton State University and The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. The other division will include Southern Utah along with Dixie State University, New Mexico State University, Grand Canyon University, California Baptist University, Seattle University and Utah Valley University.
“I cannot overstate my level of excitement in making this expansion announcement,” said Hurd, “The opportunity to bring five quality institutions into the conference, to significantly strengthen the WAC’s national basketball brand and other championship sport profiles, and to bring football back under the WAC umbrella is one that made sense.
“The end result could not have been accomplished without the collaboration and shared visions of the WAC’s Board of Directors and the Presidents of the incoming institutions. It not only stabilizes the conference for the future; it also positions it for significant growth and success.”
The addition of football will bring to 20 (10 men’s and 10 women’s) the number of sports in which the WAC will sponsor championships. Divisional play only will be held for baseball, softball, volleyball, men’s soccer and women’s soccer with championship tournaments held at the conclusion of each of the conference seasons.
“The WAC has been a strong athletic conference for many, many years with tremendous national brand identification,” said Tarleton President Dr. James Hurley. “The addition of these five outstanding institutions solidifies our conference as one of the best mid-major conferences in the country. Simply put, football is back and the WAC is back, stronger than ever.”
Men’s and women’s basketball will feature both divisional and crossover play with the number of conference games to be played still to be determined. The conference’s tournament will remain in Las Vegas.
The new members, along with Dixie State and Tarleton, will give the WAC seven full-time members that play in, or are transitioning to, the Football Championship Subdivision. It is anticipated that at least one more football-playing member will be added, but a timetable has not yet been established.
“It’s an exciting time for the WAC and all the member institutions with the expansion of five prominent universities,” said Lonn Reisman, Tarleton’s Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics. “These additions to the WAC will instantly raise the competition across the board in all sports. Commissioner Hurd, the university presidents and athletic directors have done an outstanding job in maintaining the conference’s longstanding tradition and elevating the national brand identity of the WAC as a premier mid-major conference in the country. This expansion, with the addition of bringing football back to the WAC, only enhances the conference’s brand even more.”
The WAC previously sponsored football at the Football Bowl Subdivision from 1962 until 2012. Seven Pro Football Hall of Famers played in the WAC and the conference boasts 43 NFL First Round picks.
“I couldn’t be more excited to add this great group of universities and athletic departments to the Western Athletic Conference. It’s going to be a great move for everyone involved and I’m looking forward to creating, and rekindling, some of these great in-state rivalries. This is a monumental move for our football program because now we can move forward as part of a conference that, I know firsthand, has one of the most prestigious football histories in all of college football.

The 2021 WAC projected standings help determine the seeds of the teams in the 2021 WAC Championship bracket. The remainder of the season is simulated a large number of times, and the resulting seeds are used to simulate the WAC tournament.
A team's relative odds to win the 2021 WAC Tournament depend only partly on their WAC bracket seed. Winning the WAC Tournament also depends on the dynamics of the 2021 WAC bracket. In some cases, the team with a better WAC Tournament seed may actually face a harder path to the WAC Tournament championship than a team with a worse WAC tournament seed.
In addition, because WAC tournament seeds are based on win-loss records in WAC conference games, WAC tournament seeds are not always the most accurate measure of a team's true performance level. This is another reason why higher seeded teams in the WAC bracket can have better odds to win the 2021 WAC Tournament than lower seeded teams in the WAC bracket.

Football in the Western Athletic Conference was once a staple in the state of Utah.
It’s expected to be making a return, at the Football Championship Subdivision level.
Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel reported Wednesday that the WAC is expected to make an announcement Jan. 14 that the conference will again sponsor football, with play beginning in 2022 at the FCS level. The initial members of the WAC football league will include two Utah universities � Dixie State and Southern Utah � as well as Abilene Christian, Lamar, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin and Tarleton State, per Thamel.

How the WAC football conference would be formed.
Southern Utah has been a member of the Big Sky Conference since 2012, but last month, the school acknowledged it had received an invitation to join the WAC.

Dixie State, along with Tarleton State, joined the WAC in other sports this past summer. The Trailblazers and Texans moved up from Division II to the Division I level and were set to play their first season as FCS independents this past fall until COVID-19 pushed the FCS season to the spring.
Abilene Christian, Lamar, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin � all Texas schools � currently compete in the Southland Conference.
The WAC would need to add at least one additional team to become eligible for NCAA postseason, at least initially. The NCAA requires six postseason eligible members to form an FCS league, and Dixie State and Tarleton State are in their first year of a four-year transitional period to the D-I level, leaving the WAC one institution short as it would currently be constituted once the announcement becomes official.
Thamel reported the league will look to add two more schools in the coming months � with a mix of Division II and other FCS institutions among the possible additions.
A return to the FBS level?
Then here’s a real kicker: Thamel reported the WAC’s long-term plan for football includes returning the league to the Football Bowl Subdivision level within a decade. The WAC played football at the sport’s highest collegiate level from 1962 to 2012, when attrition over the years finally forced the conference to stop sponsoring the sport.
The WAC is expected to add two more schools in the coming months. There’s a mix of DII and current FCS institutions being vetted by commissioner Jeff Hurd. The long-term goal of the league is to elevate the WAC back to FBS football later this decade. 2/3 � Pete Thamel (@PeteThamel) January 6, 2021.
BYU and Utah played in the WAC from its establishment in 1962 until 1998, when they � along with six other WAC members � left and formed the Mountain West Conference. Utah State played in the WAC from 2005 to its final year in 2012.
BYU won 19 conference titles � 13 outright, six shared � and a national championship during its time in the WAC, while Utah won two league championships and Utah State one.
Other Utah schools this would impact.
Southern Utah currently competes alongside another Utah institution, Weber State, in the Big Sky Conference. This move would leave the Wildcats as the lone member of the league that has its headquarters in Farmington.
Dixie State had already joined another Utah school, Utah Valley, in the WAC with its move to Division I. The addition of Southern Utah would put three of the state’s seven Division I schools in the same conference. UVU, however, does not sponsor football.
